Congratulations to Emeritus Professor Barry Welch on being awarded the Brimacombe Prize.
For those who don’t know, Barry was a member of the department of chemical and materials engineering from 1980 to 1998 during which time he also served as Head of Department. Barry is a world leading expert in metallurgy and especially aluminium smelting technology. Recognition of his expertise has been evident in the many awards and accolades he has received in his lifetime for research and industry significance. That he continues to be recognised for his achievements is testament to the impact of his achievements.

About the Award.

The Brimacombe Prize recognizes outstanding achievements in materials process engineering and is presented in memory of J. Keith Brimacombe, an innovative giant in the field of materials process engineering during the later quarter of the 20th century.

This Prize consists of $20,000 CDN and, as a permanent record, each Prize recipient is awarded a sculpture depicting Athena, the Greek goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature. She was the embodiment of wisdom, reason, and purity. She is noted to have only fought for just reasons and would not fight without a purpose. Characteristically, the Brimacombe Prize recognizes intelligence and wisdom. The certificate recognizes the qualities that give form to the purpose of the awardee while recognizing his/her accomplishments as an excellent researcher, visionary and innovator for a better society, teacher, and world ambassador, creatively integrating science and technology.

The Brimacombe Prize was designed to do more than merely honor; it is intended that this award speak symbolically of the achievements of its recipients while perpetuating these attributes that Keith Brimacombe set as standards for his own character and career.
