With sadness we received the news on 9 April 2020 that a long-serving technician in our department, Steve Strover, passed away following a prolonged illness.  Steve began his career with our department way back in 1986, bringing his skills in metallography, microscopy and photography to our materials engineering teaching and research.

In his job, he has had close interactions with many previous and current staff members, and numerous students. There are also many of you who have over the years gotten to know Steve very well, and formed very strong friendships.  I am sure you will feel the extra loss of your dear friend.

We are organising a collection for Steve’s wife Yuki.  Emeritus Professor Neil Broom will coordinate and has offered his bank account details. If you would like to contribute, please email us at Kerryn – Kerryn.levy@auckland.ac.nz

  1. A most grievous loss from the department, Steve was always happy to help where he could, and was most interesting to talk to about many things from music and the arts, to motorcycles and cars, and of course all things metallurgy. RIP Steve.
